Just your casual reminder: if you are staying on Xitter, then I don’t care that you aren’t a Nazi yourself. I don’t care whether you are “fighting Nazis” there. I don’t care that switching social networks is hard, or that there are no good alternatives. I don’t care that you only use it to communicate behind a lock with a selected few people.
Whatever your reasons, your mere presence there provides relevance and credibility to a platform which is being run by a Nazi sympathizer and used to amplify Nazi ideas. Your mere presence there helps secure revenue for this crap. I don’t see how anything you say can possibly outweigh this kind of damage.
This is merely the most recent example in a very long row:
“X has locked and suspended the accounts of journalists and researchers who shared the alleged identity of a neo-Nazi cartoonist known as Stonetoss after the cartoonist appealed to site owner Elon Musk.”

I have just discovered that those odd waste/recycling bins that are all over the oldest bits of Bergen, Norway, link to an UNDERGROUND PNEUMATIC WASTE TRANSPORT SYSTEM. The waste collects for a bit and then WHOOSH... it's off to the recycling centre. All underground. No bin lorries (garbage trucks), fewer road vehicles, less noise... amazing. @davidho says that my (considerable) excitement about this is entirely unreasonable. I disagree.

Me, an idiot: “So, kids, by setting the thermostat a little lower and eating less meat, we’re doing our part to make the world more sustainable”
VCs, very smart: “We just raised $100 billion dollars from the sovereign wealth funds of three petrostates to build the world’s largest AI supercomputer. It uses as much power and water as Guatemala and the primary use case is for management consultants to autogenerate powerpoints for justifying mass layoffs.”

If you gather people together, online or off, managing those people is your job. It is, first and foremost, a human job because humans are very weird. Technology can help, sure, but anyone who sees it as primarily a tech problem is destined for failure.

I finished Final Fantasy Rebirth and I can’t remember ever feeling so ambivalent about a game before.
On the one hand, it’s masterfully done and looks exactly like a modern FFVII should look, and the story updates are for the most part enhancements to the original, or intriguing.
On the other hand, there is SO MUCH of it. By the end I was ready to be done and everything began to feel like a chore. The end fight sequence (from the last rest area) alone took like two hours.

You know how they tell you to use a little elbow grease when cleaning?
They don't warn you that this will absolutely injure your decrepit elderly body given enough elbow grease and enough life experience.
Having an injured shoulder from scrubbing a frying pan is somehow even more annoying than waking up with a stiff/pulled muscle (which I have also done).

Four reminders, courtesy of this powerful Washington Post story:
1) Texas is a barbaric state, treating women as state-controlled vessels, not human beings.
2) The right-wing Supreme Court encourage states to be barbaric.
3) The Republican Party has made this barbarism a core part of its mission, and wants to make it national policy.
4) Vote as if your life, or the life of someone you care about, depends on it. Because it may, soon.

↺Tboostedezra :neocat_flag_androgyne:everything you need to know about fedi dms and privacy. the last post you need.
just because they're not "private" doesn't mean they're completely public. the only people with "access" to your dms are the head admins of your and the recipient's server. not the regular moderators. they need access to the actual files running the server.there aren't even any tools for them to read your dms. they live deep in a massive human-unreadable file. that's like trying to find an alien needle in an alien haystack without knowing what either of them look like.they have no interest in reading your dms, nowhere near as much as corporate apps like twitter, discord, tumblr, etc, that can probably read them more easily and maybe automatically. this "issue" is as old as email, fedi admins just have no reason to hide it. the dialogue box shows up so that you understand that it's not perfectly secure.if you do need actual secure messaging, federated options include xmpp, which is reliable but very basic*, and matrix which has more features but it breaks all the time and the devs are openly pro-cop. they both suck but it's what we have. signal or telegram are centralized options that support encryption.
*yes i know xmpp "supports" more features, but that's essentially theoretically. there are 0 (zero) client or server projects that actually implement anything more than the basics.
